KnowledgeTree version numbering across editions

October 13, 2006 – 10:20 am

Our version numbering across editions is somewhat confusing to both ourselves and many other people. KnowledgeTree Open Source edition is currently in the 3.1.x range and the KnowledgeTree commercials editions (KnowledgeTree SMB and Enterprise) are in the 1.1.x range.

The reason for this is easy to explain: KnowledgeTree Open Source has been around for 3 years and undergone 3 major revisions, with 3.x being the most signficant update: an entirely new (and modern) architecture and user interface was implemented. The first KnowledgeTree commercial edition release was in May 2006 and was labeled 1.x.

Since the editions are at their core the same application we have decided to harmonize version numbering across all editions. As of the next major Open Source release (scheduled for November) all three editions will move to the same major version number, with Open Source edition releases having odd numbered minor version numbers and Commercial editions having even numbered minor version numbers (reflecting the fact that new code is first released to the Open Source community before finding its way into a stable commercial release).

Those readers with Linux kernel experience will find this “stable” and “unstable” branch numbering mechanism quite familiar.

Following this new scheme, the next release version numbering looks as follows:

  • Open Source Edition 3.3
  • SMB and Enterprise 3.4
